#68 Don’t waste your life chasing someone else’s goal

I spent years building someone else's life, despite knowing deep down something was very wrong. Don't blindly following the gurus; here's how to figure out if you're chasing someone else's goal, and start forming your own plans.

Ok, so a slightly ranty “high horse” story about all the gurus who talk about money money money….

So a few years ago I was making a big change,
Filled with ambition and fire.
I wanted the kind of fast success that was being rammed down my throat every day on Instagram

So I sat through sales calls with loads of these kind of coaches.
And even paid a lot of money for coaching with some of them.
Some were great. But many had the same old story…

If I wanted to scale “this is the way”:

Daily hustle, more content.
Back-to-back sales calls
FOMO and scarcity

They told me “if you want to make multi-six figures, You have to be willing do what others won’t.”

For me, money isn’t the only goal for success.

When I told them my plan,
They all told me I was thinking too small.
They told me I didn’t want it enough.

And they were right.

I looked at their lifestyle, their schedule, their day.
If that’s truly what it takes, Then I don’t want that.

I’ve been so brainwashed by default cultural values where the only thing of worth is income, job title or business growth.
I find I have to remind myself of this CONSTANTLY.

I keep forgetting my goal is to prioritize free family time.
I’ll watch a podcast or chat with a peer running big design agencies,
or chasing ambitious income goals,
And I admire them for it, and set my own similar goals, all related to work.

Then when I fail them, because I don’t have the time or I’m battling with ambition or low energy levels to make it happen right now, I think “I need to do this or that”.

Then I remember:
That’s their goal.

My goal:
I only work 4 hours per day.

The rest goes to family.
I’m right on target, for the only goal that matters.

I just keep having to remind myself that that’s my measuring stick for success.
So I stuck to my plan instead:

Baby steps.
Give myself years, not months or weeks.
A little time to chip away at it every day.
Prioritize my own time first.

I never achieved viral growth.
I’m not a millionaire but I’m comfortable.
And I’ve built a life that I wanted.

And now?
There’s a noticeable shift in the online waters.

Those same coaches are sharing their burnout stories, and talking about work-life balance.
Some are capping their income to focus on time with family,
Some quitting all together,
Abandoning all their progress.

Just because someone makes more money,
Doesn’t mean their way is the right way.

Their goal doesn’t have to be your goal.

So seek advice from mentors.
But think for yourself.

Use what works for you.
Disregard the rest.

It’s the complete opposite approach to every other goal-driven coaching that I see out there.
But this was my mindset when I started my own coaching, determined to do better, to BE better.
When I applied this model of thinking to my own coaching for freelancers,
my own students are having their own breakthroughs,
building solo businesses that support their lifestyle,
instead of building a lifestyle that supports their business.

I feel very proud to have such powerful and moving testimonials from my students
